2011 Symposium

Last year, as part of the Symposium, the Rakow Research Library at the Corning Museum of Glass hosted a volunteer work session on Thursday afternoon during which approximately 20 people attending the Symposium were able to help organize, catalog and manage material from the Frederick Carder Archives located at the Library. During the three hour session, original drawings, sketches, correspondence, notebooks and other material was identified, cataloged and properly stored under the supervision of the Library staff.

One of the “discoveries” made that day by Marshall Ketchum was a cache of previously unpublished goblet line drawings. These line drawings generally showed pattern variations or additional details about already known goblets. With the Rakow’s permission, Marshall has been adding these line drawings to the Club Web Site (www.cardersteubenclub.org). A partial list of the shape numbers for which new line drawings have been added to the web site is as follows: 3387, 5154, 6074, 6126, 6268, 6401, 6704, 6844, 6936, 6947, 6955, 7046, 7079, 7080, 7081, 7122, 7234, 7235, 7237, 7343, 7344, 7345, and 7644, More will be added, but this demonstrates the kind of information remaining to be “discovered” in the Frederick Carder Archives.

The reaction of the Rakow Library and those attending this volunteer session was sufficiently positive that we will be repeating this session again this year as part of the Symposium. This year’s volunteer work session will be held on Thursday, September 15 from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. at the Rakow Library. Participants may come at any time during the afternoon and work as long as they wish. If you are interested in participating in this session, make your travel plans for the Symposium so that you arrive in Corning prior to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15. We are also again planning a small glass show for Thursday evening and the formal programming of the Symposium will take place on Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17. Discounted hotel rates are available for the Symposium at the Radisson Hotel Corning (607-962-5000) and the Comfort Inn Corning (607-962-1515).
