David Chadwick-Brown showed a machine threaded shade with engraved floral pattern (see above). If you look on page 32 of Gardner you will see a matching bowl with Green threading Ill. 37. Gardner goes on to say that Carder said the bowl was the very first piece engraved at Steuben about 1904. It was amazing that these pieces were able to be engraved without chipping the threading!

On the very next page (p.33) a leaf and vine Steuben shade is shown in Ill.59 similar to David C-B(below).

I know you, David, suggested Fostoria made very similar examples but I have always thought it was Imperial that made the look-alikes. Imperial examples were so similar the price of the Steuben examples plummeted. Talented dealers even had a hard time identifying them properly. The fact is the Imperial pieces threw shades of orange, pink, and blue color from the gold aurene while the Steuben pieces threw pinks and blues from the Gold Aurene areas. To this day the Steuben pieces in this decoration are a fantastic buy for those with a keen eye to tell the difference!
