Diatreta – Steuben

Made personally in limited quantity by Frederick Carder between 1945 and 1959, these very elaborate vases and bowls simulate Roman glass from the 4th century. Ornamentation was created through the cire perdue process and then fused to the object in a caged fashion with small glass struts. Examples in a variety of colors were satinized, personally signed “F. Carder,” and dated. This glass is probably not attainable. Figurals, faces and leaves interlocking like lattices are characteristic of this extremely difficult and advanced process.

Arts & Crafts

Alan,

I was happy to see three Steuben Aurene vases on the cover of author Judith Miller’s new book “Arts and Crafts; Living With the Arts and Crafts Style.”
