Let’s explore one of the speakers who will present a program on DeVilbiss Perfumes at the Carder Steuben Club Symposium this coming September.
Title: “The Glass Artistry of DeVilbiss”
Description:
Marti DeGraaf and Toby Mack are highly regarded DeVilbiss perfume bottle enthusiasts, researchers, archivists, and collectors, and are currently awaiting the release of their book on DeVilbiss perfume bottles and accessories. Their Symposium presentation will focus on The DeVilbiss Company and their glass suppliers of the early 20th century, including and comparing Steuben and other legendary art glass and elegant glass houses. Share glimpses of their collection of bottles, factory documentation, research and insights into these beautiful perfume vessels.
From DeVilbiss Perfumizers’ first introduction in 1907 by young Thomas DeVilbiss until the closing of production in 1968, the DeVilbiss Company created a tremendous range of beautiful, top-quality Perfumizers and vanity products. From early models made from Bohemian bottles and salt cellars fitted with basic atomizer mounts, elegant spray fittings were designed and produced and fitted to bottles from some of the world’s premiere glass houses , including Steuben, Quezal, Durand (Vineland), H. C. Fry, Cambridge, Fostoria, Tiffin, and Imperial in the U.S., and some of the great glassmakers of France, Italy, Germany and Czechoslovakia. DeVilbiss’ design, manufacturing and decorating artistry embraced the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, reflected the Czech glass craze of the 1930’s, endured the Great Depression, two World Wars, and the great post-war prosperity and style evolutions of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. Explore the similarities and differences of the glass of others and the Carder Steuben that you know so well.
