DECORATE AURENES
BY ROBERT MUELLER

Mr. Carder’s Decorated Aurenes are possibly the best iridescent decorated glass made. Whether compared to Tiffany, Durand or Quezal, Mr. Carder’s Aurenes just were spectacular.

Mr. Carder did not stop at his Blue and Gold Aurene, but created many more types for the public to view. Mr. Carder’s range of types goes from Red, Green, Blue, Gold, Purple, Turquoise and Yellow. Collectively they show the public how Mr. Carder would use his Aurenes where possible.

You would also see Mr. Carder use his different designs on all his works. Pulled feather, hooked design, millefiori, chain, leaf and vine, peacock feather, heart and trailings, drag loop and many others.

He used his designs in so many ways. On shades, two piece lamps, vases and bowls with so many different combinations I am not sure if we will ever know what he totally created at The Steuben Glass Works.

Some day I would like to see if someone, an expert in math, could sit down and be given all the facts to see the total statistical unique items that Mr. Carder may have created.

When we start to compare Mr. Carder’s decorated Aurene to the other three competitive companies, I feel no one could come close to Mr. Carder’s diversity.

We also need to look at how the Decorated Aurenes stack up at auction houses. There is always that one, maybe a second piece of decorated glass from another company, but now days we see many of Mr. Carder’s pieces getting a very fair price.

As we all look at piece we have in our collections, or had and the great enjoyment we get from Mr. Carder’s decorated Aurenes, most of us no doubt feel the pieces we have are better than other pieces of iridescent glass from other competitors.
