Issue 210
Over the Thanksgiving holiday I had an opportunity to make a new friend; David Chadwick-Brown. David resides in San Diego. Marshall Ketchum had connected us up since he new I spent some time in San Diego. David shared his wonderful collection and I will through a series of Gazettes share them with you. Sometimes the photography leaves a little to be desired. However, limited time and a major collection to see. So much to see. First off is the entrance to David’s condominium.
David Chadwick-Brown is such a genial host. Like some, he believes we should share our collections with others. So, we thank him for allowing our visit and picture taking. San Diego has its famous zoo, Sea World, the ship Midway and Carder Steuben Glass. This next piece is a paper weight with a figure of a mermaid. I noted I had never seen a piece like this, and David flipped it over to see the flourish of Mr. Carder’s distinctive signature. You can see that David likes lamps and lighting fixtures. He utilizes shades over a bed as a means to utilize shades. David recounted how during earth quakes how he is rushed to stabilize some pieces; particularly those on top of cases. Thanks to David for this wonderful event of sharing.
You’ve notice that David Chadwick-Brown has stacks of books. Should give you a clue that he is a university professor. Teaches political science and business law. Specializes in Roman history. I don’t quite know how he keeps his massive library and his extensive Steuben collection, but he does.
Continuing our tour of David Chadwick-Brown in San Diego. A few special items to lust after. A picture of David with an admiring Susan Shovers. David has been a collector for 30 years. He has about 400 pieces of Carder Steuben.
In the last Gazette did you notice in the cabinets how David Chadwick-Brown using shades as part of the lighting in the top of the cabinet? The goodies keep coming. Like most collectors there is Mr. Carder’s works everywhere. Under tables, on top of cabinets, under the bed, and just everywhere. Notice in the last light fixture that it is hung by silk chords.
Forgive the blurriness of the first lamp. It’s such a special piece; kind of ashamed. The second picture is also blurry. It is a one of a kind modern Steuben piece. David explained the artist and the meaning of the swimming figures. Unfortunately, I can’t recount the background. David’s taste while sharply focused on Carder’s work, allow room for other special glass forms.
Several weeks ago we sent you Ed Bush’s talk at September’s Symposium. It involved
correspondence between Mr. Carder and Stanley Brothers. The letters to Stanley Brothers were
addressed to Kalamazoo, MI. So, Dave Williams of Kalamazoo went out looking for Mr.
Brothers home. What he found was a parking lot with a sportswear store next door. So, attached is a picture of “next door” to the Brothers home.
Also, last night’s pictures of David Chadwick-Brown missed three photos which are attached.
