Revisiting Middle “C”

I just found one more strange clue to the subject of Mr. Carder’s middle name.
On page 311 of Mr Dimitroff’s book there is an application for a patent. He applied as Frederick Carder and the patent office responded to him with Mr. F. C. Carder. This somewhat implies he was already on record with them.

Could it be that he used the middle name Caleb in Europe and when he came here he dropped it? It would be interesting to see if early patents were filed with a middle name or initial.
