Last week we reported on the holding of the American Cut Glass Association annual meeting in San Diego. We are reminded that Frederick Carder did both cut and engraved glass. If you go to page 344-350 of Gardner you’ll see illustrations from Salesman’s Catalog of Steuben Cut Glass. This isn’t all of the cut glass that Carder produced. However, let me suggest it is much more than most people realize. In addition he did a considerable amount of engraved glass, particularly in goblets and table settings. Lisa Ackerman of Orange, California who will be attending the Carder Steuben Symposium attended the cut glass meeting and supplied this report to the Elegant Glass club of southern California on one of the speakers, who is a restoration expert.
Good Morning Fellow Elegant Glass Club members!
Reading Michael Krumml’s Tale Of Oops this morning reminds me that I need to share something from last week’s ACGA’s convention last week. One of the sessions featured an in person interview with Fred Matthews of Glass Studios, Ltd. His family owned company does glass restoration and we were absolutely amazed at what he was able to do to a piece to bring it back!
Here is his website. http://glass-studios.net/
You will wonder especially at how the first vase was restored under Examples. Well, at this point all you could do is go up, right? So he polishes down the whole interlocking cuts and part of the pattern below it, re cuts it, then re-cuts the top dental cuts! I can’t conceive of the skill this would have to take.
Fred had to gently correct Mike Manginella who was interviewing him that he doesn’t ‘repair’ glass, he restores it.
Well, whatever he does to it, I’m all for it. And yes, a dealer selling a piece like this should disclose to the buyer that it has been restored and is not in original condition.
What’s even better is that Fred is from Lompoc! Well, o.k. for most of us Long Beach would be better, but at least it isn’t Philadelphia, right?
He also removes sickness from decanters and vases and even re-silvers glass.
Perhaps his company is old news to you folks, but wanted to pass along his contact information to you in case you have an ‘oops’ that has to be un-oopsed.
Well, it was a great convention to attend, and Mom and I learned a lot. Next year it is in Texas. Save your pennies now! 🙂 Lisa
