Issue 1717

“A Man and his Glass: A Sesquicentennial Celebration” will explore many aspects of Frederick Carder’s work and life. Dr. Audrey Whitty, CMOG’s new curator of European Glass, will dazzle Symposium participants with a presentation about Carder’s 20+ years at Stevens & Williams before immigrating to the U.S. to start Steuben Glass Works. Dr. Whitty was most recently Curator of Ceramics, Glass and Asian Collections at the National Museum of Ireland.

CARDINAL RED

You may remember I have been working on Cardinal Red harder for the past 4 years trying to get the issue straightened out. I now have my own piece on it’s way. I think this color has very similar coloring agents to Rouge Flambe. They would include cadmium and selenium similar to his non production shaded ruby( amberina). There is also the possibility of an addition of tincture of alabaster. This 2028 plate is the only shape I have ever seen Cardinal Red used with. Over 40 years I now have pictures now of 7 of these plates from different owners. A few are signed. When it gets here I will try to determine what the swirls, of what looks to be an alabaster stirred into the glass is. Then I will let everybody know what I see.

What does everyone think? Thank you Eric Ericson for the leads to this discovery. Ericson book 2 page 37. This has been a tough one!
