Another selection from the University of Southern Indiana Carder Steuben exhibit of last summer.
Blue Aurene Vase with Applied Scrolled Handles
Iridized Lead Glass
Blue Aurene glass was created a few years after the original gold variation using the same formula with a cobalt additive. This type of glass remained in production for almost 30 years. Although other colored Aurenes were made, Frederick Carder held the gold and blue in higher esteem.
Technical Note: This vase takes on a shape reminiscent to the Greek form “Krater”, which translates “to mix”. The Ancient Greeks would use this form vessel for mixing water or wine.
