Controversy

Issue 1091

Yesterday we sent out Gazette #1090 where Tommy Dreiling said a certain nappy was improperly identified as Tiffany-it was Carder Steuben. (see below)

Today, Bruce Orr of Naperville, Illinois responds that it is indeed, Tiffany.

Hi Alan

I was contacted by Dallas Auction about the item that Tommy identified as Steuben shape number 2670. Although Steuben did this shape I believe it to be a little presumptuous to assume that Tiffany could not have done the same. In fact the signature on the item is a perfect Tiffany signature. I enlisted Steve Early JR. to help in the quest and he found that if you refer to Alastair Duncans “Louis C. Tiffany The Garden Museum Collection on page 275 you will find the original catalog from LCT that shows this exact piece, second plate in second row fifth piece. Tiffany called it an olive bowl. I hope this clears up the confusion.

Tommy Dreiling of Brooklyn sends this along.

Hi – I came across this and thought the group would be interested. I just emailed the auction house and gave them the correct Steuben shape number #2670 and the page number 233 in the Gardner book.
