Gail Bardhan at The Rakow Library reports the following contribution to our store of knowledge.

The Rakow Library at The Corning Museum of Glass recently received the following, which may be of interest to Steuben collectors when next they come to Corning.

Huffman, Harry E., 1898-1967.

Jobs. [Corning, N.Y. : H. Huffman, 1930-1933] 2 v. (231 p.) :

Daybooks used by Harry Huffman during his employment at

Steuben to record time taken to create glass molds.

Entries include dates and number of hours worked,

assistants’ names and number of hours worked, mold

numbers, ware numbers, customer names, and sketches of

press molds for vases, statues, plaques, and art deco

style panels, including those intended for Radio City.

Some of the pages in these volumes are referred to in:

Moulds pattern shop, Steuben (TP853.N6 .H89m *).

Continuously paged. Only 41 p. of v. 2 have been used.

Huffman, Harry E., 1898-1967.

Moulds pattern shop, Steuben. [Corning, N.Y. : H. Huffman, 1932-1933] 1 v. (unpaged) :

Only 8 pages of the ledger book have been used.

Ledger book used by Harry Huffman during his employment at

Steuben to record some of the glass molds made between

March 24, 1932-February 3, 1933.

This is a condensed version of information from selected

entries recorded in the 2 v. set titled: Jobs (TP853.N6

.H89 *). Page numbers refer to pages in those volumes.

Entries include date, time required to make the mold, mold

numbers, ware numbers, customer names, and sketches of

press molds for vases, statues, plaques, and art deco

style glass panels, including those intended for Radio City.

The donor, Harry Huffman’s granddaughter, is looking for additional information on her grandfather. So far, we have been able to determine the following:

The Corning city directories first list him as working for Corning Glass Works in (or by) 1923. According to Corning Glass Work’s internal newsletter, Harry E. Huffman, a Main Plant employee for 38 years and a machinist in the “A” Factory Machine Shop since 1933, retired Jan. 1, 1963 from Corning Glass Works. He was presented money at a farewell party. Early in his service, Huffman worked in Glass Melting, Bulb Shipping and Product Development departments, and for several years was a patternmaker in the Architectural Design Dept. In the 1967 anniversary dinner booklet, Mr. Huffman was listed in the memorial section, and noted as having 45 of active + retired years of service. (That might mean that he began his work for CGW in 1922.)

The archives for the company no longer have personnel files. If anyone else has knowledge of Mr. Huffman’s work for Steuben, we would be very pleased to be contacted.

Thank you.
