Metropolitan Glass Club Meeting Notice
“Glass in Lighting” a presentation by JENNIFER SCANLAN
Tuesday Evening, May 6, 2014 at 7:00PM
St. Michael’s Church – 99th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue
The last lecture of the NY Metropolitan Glass Club’s 2013/2014 season on May 6 will feature Jennifer Scanlan, who will provide an historical overview of glass in lighting.
Ms. Scanlan will be discussing how the unique characteristics of glass, with its radiance, modulating and reflecting qualities and ability to transform color, have been used in lighting from actual light sources to unique works of art. From oil lamps to Venetian chandeliers, from Tiffany to contemporary lighting designers, glass lets artists use light as one of their materials, taking illumination and the projection of light as far as their imaginations can go.
Jennifer Scanlan is a New York-based independent curator focusing on contemporary art and design. She was Associate Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design for twelve years where she organized a wide range of exhibitions. Ms. Scanlan has a BA in Art History and Italian from Vassar and an MA in the History of Decorative Arts, Design and Culture from the Bard Graduate Center. Her most recent exhibition, entitled “Illuminate: Design in Light” and featuring the work of leading New York City designers, is currently running at the beautiful new UrbanGlass exhibition space in downtown Brooklyn. Her next exhibition is called “Back to Eden: Contemporary Artists Wander the Garden” and will be mounted at the Museum of Biblical Art in the Lincoln Center area.
