The article about Bobby Rockwell giving a Carder piece to Christ Episcopal church is gratifying and gracious. Thanks for sharing and hopefully the piece of art will be celebrated as a religious symbol of peace. Matthew Carney

What a great take from Bobby Rockwell, and what a perfectly appropriate donation. Thanks for the thoughts.

Scott Hansen points the way to research the head of Christ. See the discussion of the head of Christ on page 53 of Gardner (and specifically note the text of footnote 31). Then see a similar discussion in Dimitroff at page 51. So, let us explore a summation of this interesting background further.

One October morning in 1933 word spread through Corning and reached Carder’s studio that the new Steuben management had smashed all the glass remaining from the accumulated stock of Carer Steuben.

When Carder heard of what has become known as the “smashing,” he was devastated. The morning after he learned of the smashing incident, Carder quietly molded in clay a life-size head of Christ adorned with a crown of thorns. When finished he stepped back and in a near whisper said, “This is crucifixion.”
