Issue 3713
Recently three Carder Steuben Cintra “paperweight” cologne bottles from the Micki and Jay Doros collection were auctioned off at Sotheby’s New York. These scent bottles are not only functional items but are valued as works of art that reflect the innovative spirit and artistic vision of Frederick Carder from the 1920’s.
The Cintra technique involves embedding bits of glass within a clear crystal body, creating a speckled effect that is both vibrant and intricate. Ribbons of colored glass, controlled bubbles in linear and hexagonal patterns, and other decorative features are added to create exquisite designs in the cologne bottles. The outside of the thick, colorless crystal is cut and polished into faceted geometric shapes, providing another dimension of design on top of the decorative centers. These combined techniques result in unique and visually stunning pieces often referred to as “paperweight” cologne bottles due to their resemblance to glass paperweights.
Paul Doros wrote a delightful introduction to these pieces for the auction, commenting on his parents’ love of Steuben glass and also relating an anecdote from Frederick Carder about their design: Carder, interviewed at the age of 98, was asked why he made the bottles of such thick glass. He cheerfully replied, with his typical puckish sense of humor, “Why, in case a husband got his wife angry at night in the bedroom, she would have something heavy to throw at him.”
While we are unable to confirm their flight aerodynamics, we can certainly attest to the exceptional beauty and intricate design of these colognes. It’s no wonder they are prized pieces in any collection.
We are collecting items for our annual fundraising auction that will be held during the Symposium Banquet in September. All proceeds from the auction benefit the Carder Steuben Glass Association and help to support our mission.
You can help support the CSGA by donating or consigning Carder Steuben glass, post-Carder Steuben glass, glass from the same era, or glass with relevance to Corning. Other items like books, New York state wine, event tickets, or Frederick Carder items also make great auction entries. If you are interested in supporting our organization in this way, please send item descriptions to President@steubenglass.org.
The Carder Steuben Glass Association is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. You will receive a tax receipt for your donation. Thank you!
Our next virtual CSGA member meeting is almost here! Please plan to join us on Sunday, June 23, 2024 from 4:00-6:00pm EDT. Our topic for this meeting will be “Is It or Isn’t It?” — a discussion of glass pieces that may or may not be made by Steuben. This is a chance to share your knowledge and to learn from others about the forms, glass combinations, hallmarks, and other details that can help you better identify a piece of Steuben glass. And, as always, this is a chance to catch up with other CSGA members and enjoy talking about glass together.
The event will take place using Zoom, and meeting information will be emailed to all CSGA members on Wednesday in advance of the session. If you have any questions please contact Cheryl Dartt at secretary@steubenglass.org. We look forward to seeing you there!
