Saturday I attended the Cincinnati Art Galleries auction in downtown Cincinnati. This gallery is known for its Rookwood and Keramics auction sales. They also include and have been growing a component of art glass.
First, we met and had a delightful time visiting with Dr. Tina & Gary Volz. Tina just got her PhD in nursing. You may recall that Gary did a great workshop on lighting and display of collections at last year’s Symposium. They were gracious hosts. I am reminded how nice and how much fun it is every time we have occasion to visit with art glass collectors. We have so many open invitations from collectors to visit. We always feel so bad because they are so sincerely given and unfortunately all can’t be taken up in a busy life. I think most collectors would love nothing better than to have a fellow collector come a pay a visit; share the love of Mr. Carder’s Steuben glass.
Anyhow, I took pictures of the glass that was for sale. Some Steuben, but a lot of other glass. I thought it would just be interesting to see how another auction house prepares and shows their glass pre-auction. The auction itself takes place on the floor above. This floor is actually the continuing education room for the Ohio Bar Association. It is a perfect setting then to hold an auction. Arranged seating and a lectern set up in the front. Their auction is by television images and not the glass itself. I hadn’t been to an auction where there are telephone bids, internet sales and floor bidding. Quite a challenge for the auctioneer to keep it all organized. Like all auctions just fun to go and see and visit. The pictures are at:
