CARDER WINDOW PROJECT
On Monday the Gazette announced one of the Club’s major projects for 2013 to assist in having the World War 1 Memorial Window, which was designed by Frederick Carder and made by Steuben, installed in Corning City Hall. We’re pleased to report that several of you responded with contributions for which we’re greatly appreciative.
The question has been asked as to how much the installation will cost. Club President David Goldstein reports “I’ve discussed this with Tom Dimitroff and they are waiting for firm proposals. However, the preliminary estimates are in the $10-12,000 range.
Any contribution by you would be welcome.”
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
“A Man and his Glass: A Sesquicentennial Celebration” will explore many aspects of Frederick Carder’s work and life. Dr. Audrey Whitty, CMOG’s new curator of European Glass, will dazzle Symposium participants with a presentation about Carder’s 20+ years at Stevens & Williams before immigrating to the U.S. to start Steuben Glass Works. Dr. Whitty was most recently Curator of Ceramics, Glass and Asian Collections at the National Museum of Ireland.
SILVERINA
In the last Gazette the following piece was featured with commentary that it is usually seen in Silverina.
Beth Shaut of the Carder Steuben Glass Shop of Corning confirms this observation.
“This shape as a vase was to my knowledge only made in Silverina and not any other glass in vase form.”
2013 Carder Steuben Club annual Symposium will be held at The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY from September 19-21, 2013. The festivities will begin with Frederick Carder’s 150th birthday celebration on the evening of September 18, 2013.
