LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

THE CARDER WINDOW PROJECT

One of the Club’s major projects for 2013 is to assist in having the World War l Memorial Window, which was designed by Frederick Carder and made by Steuben, installed in Corning City Hall. Our goal is to have the reinstalled Window unveiled on September 18, 2013, the 150th anniversary of Frederick Carder’s birth.

Tom Dimitroff , who is leading the effort to get the Window reinstalled, has written an article about the history of the Window which is available on our website at the News and Events tab. The following is a brief summary of that article.

The World War l Memorial Window was made as a memorial to the thirty Corning residents who were killed in World War I, and whose names were placed in the Window. Those names include Cyril Carder, Frederick Carder ‘s son, so this was a very meaningful project for Frederick Carder.

The Window was originally installed over the front door of the Corning Memorial Library. However, after the library was moved to its new building in 1975, the building began to deteriorate significantly, and the safety and integrity of the Window became problematic.

In 1987 the Window was moved from the old library building to the Rockwell Museum. For most of the thirteen years the Window has been in storage, the City of Corning’s Public Art Committee has diligently been trying to find a new safe home for the Window in a place where it will be readily visible to all. The Window will be reinstalled in Corning’s City Hall, where it will be enclosed in a safe, well-lighted cabinet next to the north entrance.

All that remains is to raise the money needed to build the cabinet and properly install the Window. We are seeking contributions for the Window project from our Club members and Gazette readers. Donations toward the Carder Window Project may be sent to the Carder Steuben Club at 60 E. Market Street, #204,, Corning, NY 14830. Donations may also be sent using Paypal to Carder_Steuben_Club@yahoo.com. Donations to the Club are tax- deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Thank you for your support,

David Goldstein
