Scott Hansen has sent out a lot of information about the upcoming Symposium and I do not want to bore you by repeating that information. However, I am somewhat in shock at the fact that this will be our Club’s TENTH Symposium, because it seems like just yesterday that we formed the Carder Steuben Club.
For those of you who are new to the world of Carder Steuben, I want to provide a little background information about the Club. Early in 2000 it became clear that the Rockwell Museum, which was the repository for the various collections formed by the late Bob Rockwell, was going to change its direction and become what is now The Rockwell Museum of Western Art.
It was not clear what was going to happen to the Rockwell’s world-class collection of Carder Steuben and the Friends of Carder, the museum’s support group for Carder Steuben collectors. The bulk of the Rockwell’s Carder collection has been lent to the Corning Museum of Glass and is on display at various locations in Corning including the Carder Gallery in B Building and the windows on Market Street.
Following the 2000 business meeting of the Friends of Carder, which was held as part of the Rockwell’s Annual Carder Symposium, a group of us met to discuss the formation of a Carder Collector’s group that would be independent of the Rockwell Museum. Our Club is the end result of that meeting.
My opening remarks at this year’s Symposium will expand on our history. However, I challenge the old-timers to see if they recall the tentative name we had for what is now the Carder Steuben Club. Please email your recollections to me at elvidant@aol.com
