Calcite Charlie. Now there is a colorful name from Carder history. “The most glamorous and
successful of the salesmen was Charles Potter, who came to the Steuben Glass Works in about
1906 or 107 and continued to be Carder’s ace representative until about 1932. ” “Charlie often brought back samples of competitors’ wares to the factory and insisted that Steuben produce similar items.” Gardner goes on and describes the tug of war between Calcite Charlie and Carder about copying another’s object. Have you ever wondered what happened to those wares?
For those of you who don’t subscribe to Early’s catalogue you might find the attached page 2 from their fall catalogue interesting, showing the connection between Calcite Charlie and this weekend’s auction. Details of their auction can be found at www.earlyauctionco.com. Those who attend the auction will have a good deal of fun speculating about Calcite Charlie and his wares.
