ICE BUCKET

This is for Barbara Iglewski of Canadaguia, New York.

Barbara, it is funny you should mention ice bucket because here was my response to Joann Tortarolo on this Smoked Crystal with French Blue rings piece I wrote a couple of weeks ago.

“I am very surprised the appraiser got this one right. This is the piece that got me started on these piece’s colors and I sent Joann the confirmation. I have seen appraisers also get Celadon right in the same fashion long before we as Steuben collectors get it! Smoke Crystal or Smoked Crystal with French Blue. Most properly the latter, as shown in line drawings.

I have always wondered if this was a Campaign Cooler rather than vase?

Rande”

I have no idea why I had that reaction but you and I must be getting the same gut feeling.

VDS STUMP VASE

Joann Tortarola supplies this Redlands Historical Glass Museum’s picture identified as Steuben No 34. The label says this is a Steuben 6″ Frosted Glass Vera De Soule Bud Vase in crystal. It is marked underneath with WGA. I think it is Steuben shape #2744 like the earlier blue aurene “stump” vase.

Verre de Soie Stump or Thorn Vase

Shape #2744

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is shape 2744 in Verre-de-soie. This shape came in many colors and in several sizes.

I like Verre de Soie with a capital S. I have heard Thorn Vase, more often than Trunk Vase.

MAGIC BUBBLES

The past several days’ Gazettes have raised questions about whether this piece with controlled bubbles is Carder Steuben or something else.

“Regarding the blue “cachepot”, it is not Pairpoint either. The bubbles are the wrong shape. Pairpoint’s bubbles were not elongated like these. My guess would be Fry.”

Harry Morgan

I have to agree with Beth Shaut about the bubbly blue piece. There has been a huge chance it could be Fry from the beginning. Someone wrote an extensive article about 2 years ago how these pieces were nearly impossible to tell apart. If it had a quarter sized pontil on the bottom that would point to Steuben. This piece would require an ” in person color comparison” and that may even be inconclusive also. We have serious a problem with this one because Marshall is not finding the shape. You don’t always have to find the shape for it to be Steuben but on this particular piece we need to find the shape or we better say “probably not Steuben”. One last chance…..show me the quarter sized pontil or I am going Fry.
