SHADES

Shade production played a major role in developing and refining some of the finest examples of Mr. Carder’s creativity in art glass at the Steuben Glass Works.

Likewise, Mr. Carder’s competitors, Tiffany, Quezal, Durand, plus a few others also produced a wide production of styles, sizes, colors of shades to appeal to the public.

Serious collectors of shades turn to two essential books written by Darrah Roberts. One, in 1968 Art Glass Shades, and his second, Collecting Art Nouveau Shades done in 1972. These are the bibles to shade collectors. One other book of interest would be Book Two, A Guide to Colored Steuben Glass 1903-1933, written by Eric Erickson in 1965. This book contains a few examples for the shade collector.

However, the Steuben Shade collector needs more. There are a surprising number of articles with additional photos of shades made during the Carder era. Often shades are not signed and the photos in these articles are an important resource to determine what maker made a certain shade. I know of 23 articles that are in my “paper” library. These articles range from providing very little information, to a very well written article by Darrah Roberts. Some of the Articles I have show a photo of a few shades, then a list of shades, their description and value at that time.

The most recent article I have seen

was published in just the last three years. This excellent and well researched articles appear in a publication that probably few of you have ever seen or heard of(Old-House Journal). (Note, this article refers to yet another article) Enjoy! Bob Mueller
