Lots of clarification.

First, from Charley Giard some good background information on Sinclaire v. Steuben vases.

Hi Alan…

Let me throw in my 2 cents. Sinclaire’s Griffin has 2 wings and looks to the right. Carder’s Medieval has one wing and looks to the left. I have or have had both in black.

I believe it is generally accepted that Sinclaire often acquired Steuben blanks for engraving? Referencing Volume II of Estelle Sinclaire’s book “H.P. Sinclaire, Jr., Glassmaker” there is an example on page 27 in black of a covered jar. I have a pair of these that are engraved in a Sinclaire Oriental design and signed with Sinclaire’s logo.

Is it possible other companies made blanks that Sinclaire engraved?

Then, let’s get the spelling correct. David Goldstein of Naples, Florida sends this along.

Alan,

Estelle Sinclaire Farrar, who was a Sinclaire and wrote several books on both cut glass and Sinclaire, would go ballistic if Sinclaire was spelled without the terminal “e”. I know because I made that mistake once; no one who knew her would make it more than once. Obviously many of our writers did not know Estelle.

I once showed Bobby Rockwell a bowl in Mirror Black with a Flint White rim (perhaps Shape 2851) and asked him how to tell if it was Steuben rather than Sinclaire. Bobby ran his fingernail around the edge between the body and rim and told me that if the edge was smooth the bowl was more likely to be Sinclaire than Steuben.

Several attendees at the last few year’s Symposiums were confused because they don’t recall issues being addressed on JoAnn Godwa’s vase. Next, to try and clarify some confusion Jo Ann Godawa clarifies and sends along a picture that either didn’t come through or was lost in the internet transmission.

Dear Alan,

Your email would seem to indicate that I said that Barb Iglewski’s vase was Sinclaire. This is not so as I had enclosed a picture of my vase that was identified as Sinclaire. Mine is a completely different shape.

Perhaps the picture of mine did not come through so I am attaching it.

There you have it. Hope it makes some sense. Hope you’ve learned something.
