We’re now at the last piece of glass in our series of those displayed last summer at the exhibit at the University of Southern Indiana Carder exhibit. The research and labeling done by Susan Colaricci Sauls, the Art Collection Registrar at the University has been quite superb for someone with no prior experience with Mr. Carder’s glass.
Amethyst Ring Handled Vase
Lead Crystals
Frederick Carder’s designs for his colored crystal works have been compared to Venetian art glass, although there are many similarities, Carter chose to embellish the glass with external elements rather than internal ones. This particular vase takes on a traditional shape and the addition of the ring handles and optic ribbing in the glass adds a dressed up sophistication.
Technical Note: Venetian art glass typically used the internal embellishment techniques of latticino (twisting of glass to form candy-cane like stripes) and filigrano (colored glass surrounded by another colored glass).
