We’ve been running a series of the copy labels used for this past summers Carder exhibit at the University of Southern Indiana. Susan Colaricci Sauls, Art Collection Registrar who organize this exhibit developed the following copy label for a Peony acb vase.
Green Jade Vase Cut to Alabaster in Peony Pattern
Acid-Etched Lead Glass
The Art Nouveau style was in full swing as Steuben Glass Works opened its doors in 1903. The Peony pattern, an ancient oriental motif that represented wealth and distinction, typified the style with its “whiplash” line and floral motif. Carder was known to visit the Naturalistic Museum in New York City for inspiration for colors that would resemble natural gemstones like the Jade color family.
Technical Note: Art Nouveau is a decorative style popular in Western Europe and the U.S. from 1890 through 1910. Characterized by winding “whiplash” lines and asymmetrical patterns based on plant forms, the style was used in architecture, interior design, graphic art and design, jewelry, and glass.
