RESPONSES TO AUDUBON PLATE INQUIRY

With much searching I did find a listing in a 1964 Steuben catalog. There were a series of eighteen plates engraved from the designs of John James Audubon. Bald Eagle, Article Tern, Barred Owl, Canadian Goose,Flamingo, Great Blue Heron, Horned Grebe, Mountain Quail, Osprey, Roseate Spoonbill, Ruffled Grouse, Sandhills Crain, Snowy Egret, Snowy Owl, Swallow-tailed Kite, Water-turkey, Wild Turkey and White Pelican. 10″ diameter. Sold for $300.00. I am sorry that is the only information I could find and I have collected at least 50 catalogs. Gold luck in your search and happy collecting!

In the Gazelle May 24th Kathy Hopkins asked a question about a buy she made on EBay of 4 Steuben Audubon plates and asked what they originally sold for.

Kathy, you must buy Mary Jean Madigan’s book; Steuben Glass An American Tradition in Crystal, the revised expanded edition. It lists the prices on most of Steuben Modern pieces. Page 265 shows all 20 Audubon plates and they sold for $300 each, most came out in 1940 and a few in 1943.

WILL THE REAL MAKER STAND UP

Pictured is a bowl that looks very much like a Steuben 7091 only it is made by Duncan-Miller. The way to tell the difference is to look at the bottom and notice that the pontil is surrounded by a round disc. You will never see that on the Steuben version. The disc can also be seen in the side view if you look carefully. This color would also be unusual for a Steuben 7091.
