AUCTIONS

Dealer Gwen Stebbins is cataloguing the James Julia auction of Fairfield, Maine to be held on November 19 & 20 and invites Steuben collectors to pass along any critique they may have of her work to improve on the accuracy of the auctioning descriptions. This also provides an opportunity to also note the dates of several other major glass events. First, Early’s Auction Company is having its Fall Art Glass Auction on October 30 & 31 adjacent to the Cincinnati airport. Then, the Miami Beach Antique Show will be held on January 21-23.

Just a note to let everyone know that the auction house James D Julia has a wonderful assortment of Steuben glass coming up for auction in November. For further information, you can check out their website periodically and soon the entire catalog will be on line.

I am impressed because they have such an assortment……from the least inexpensive objects to wonderful Moss Agate pieces…….lots of acid back works, lamps and the list goes on and on. Because of having so many pieces, there may be deals to be had……they were forced to lot many items together and most of the items are unreserved and have the tags “Rockwell Gallery”, “Rockwell’s, Corning NY” and another one that escapes my brain at the moment but I think the label states it is from Bob Rockwell’s sister? They were given 150 pieces from this one collection not to mention other Steuben that was already consigned. If anyone has questions, I recommend speaking with Julie Killam. She is the assistant to the sale coordinator and is very nice and helpful and will send additional photographs, discuss conditions on the phone or through emails.

In many of the emails I receive, there are discussions about affordability for new collectors. I think this auction will provide a wonderful opportunity just because of the overwhelming quantity.

Again, I am happy to accept constructive criticism for my descriptions of Steuben glass and may be reached at gwen@lilabycreekantiques.com I enjoy learning as much as I can and have fairly tough skin (smile) I cataloged probably 3/4 of the sale. I did not get a chance to finish the Steuben, paperweights or Fairyland Lustre. Also, I am happy to give my thoughts as to any piece that people in the Club may have questions on……….again, I am not the end source for Steuben but I am reputable and can tell you what I noticed about individual items……..some pieces are just wonderful examples of common pieces.

By the way, I loved the story about Tommy Dreiling only keeping one. What a great console set!
