Aqua Marine Vase

Shape #938

This is HGM Steuben No 21. The museum inventory says it is a Steuben vase while the label on it says that it is a Loetz 2 1/2″ vase. Joann Tortarolo

This one is easy. It is shape Steuben shape 938 and the color is probably Aqua Marine. Verre de Soie is the iridescent finish on colorless glass. Aqua Marine is the same finish on a glass with a slight green tint. You should be able to see the color when compared with a piece of white paper. Marshall Ketchum

This is a Steuben Verre de Soie (or VDS)shade vase. It got it’s name because it is the same shape as a lamp shade with a foot on it. Marshall will have the shape number on this one memorised and won’t even have to look. To confirm you will have to look closely to make sure the internal glass is not a light, faint green color. The green would be easiest seen at the edge of the top rim or at the edge rim of the foot or the outside edge of the wafer between the body and foot.

If the internal glass is faint green it is Steuben’s Aqua Marine whenever it is Aqua Marine with blue rim wrap or foot wrap then it will become Cyprian. Easy lesson in Gardner color plate XI-b. Carder was very proud of this glass often called glass of silk. It got it’s look from a tin chloride or /Stannous chloride spray at the fire.

VDS was first called Flint Iridescent until it’s name was changed.

clear =VDS

green= Aqua Marine

This isn’t the “shade vase” version of shape 938. The “shade vase” is shaped like the shade but is closed in at the fitter. This is the footed version of shape 938. Marshall Ketchum

Thanks Marshall on the shape correction. I do see that there is two shapes for number 938. One is the shade vase and one is footed.
