Eye It

from Bobby Rockwell of Corning

In regards to the pair of Aqua Marine candlesticks and whether they are a true pair could be anyone’s guess. When Steuben made candlesticks, they would not make pairs per say, but individuals and the sticks were paired up later. The method was very scientific in that a ruler was placed over a pair and if it looked level; well it was a pair. Another method was to “eye it” and depending on the state of the employee, a decision was made. Yet another possibility was the time of day (trying to meet a deadline and one is in a hurry). They might also have been sold separately and a customer would try to match. There are a whole set of possible things that could have happened.

My personal thoughts as I look at the picture is that the stems are a little different and very well could be two different shapes, Steuben made more that one twisted stem. They were later married by a collector or dealer. No real harm done and you have a great set of sticks. Just my thoughts

Licking Art Glass

from Rande Bly of Birmingham, AL

To Dave Kingsley and Duane Moulton of Loxahatchee, FL

I have often wondered over the years if they should have matched the pairs of candlesticks better. I have seen way too many pairs that are not well matched for them all to be “married”. It is my opinion that they were considered “good enough” to sell. On the other hand a well matched pair is a fantastic selling point.

However if you look closely I think you will see these candlesticks are green. Perhaps wetting a small area to temporarily remove the satin finish, will reveal it in soft lighting. It is always harder with only a photo to go by but my keen eye is seeing the green and the candlesticks should be Cyprian. Just don’t let anyone see you lick the art glass you will definitely get a dirty look.
