Antique Trader

An interesting editorial piece from Editor, Catherine Saunder-Watson of Antique Trader in the August 30, 2005 edition. Catherine observes that there is a three part ritual in collecting antiques. 1. Acquiring pieces. 2. displaying them to their best advantage, and 3. sharing them with others who collect or appreciate such objects. She then goes on to observe today’s collector’s trends are evidenced by the use of antiques as decorative elements in interior design magazines.
She suggests that there has been an organic evolution of decorating combined with antiques. She notes that more and more antique show dealers are providing compatible displays, combining antiques and decor.
Yes, as the antique market and shows have been changing and responding to the likes of eBay, some new trends may be evolving. Catherine may have put her finger on a mega trend.
How perfect for the Carder collector. Mr. Carder’s works were specifically designed, at the time, to be objects central to the home for their exquisite beauty, to be shared with guests. Their classic designs continues as a constant to this day. Just think about how this is reflected in current success that the Madison Avenue Steuben Gallery is having displaying and selling “vintage” Steuben today.
At our Symposium in the next couple weeks, Sept. 14-16 we’ll be having an auction, for acquisition minded. If you want to place something in this auction contact Marshall Ketchum at mdketchum@yahoo.com
Display will be the focus of a workshop on lighting and display by decorating expert, Gary Volz. And, yes, Barb Iglewski and Guy Hoskins will be sharing their collections with us. Our keynote speaker, Marie McKee, President of Steuben Glass will undoubtedly share with us their success in today’s sales of “vintage” Carder glass and their role in the trends of today.
Antique Trader provides a provocative analysis of what is happening in today’s collectors world.
Interesting and good subject matter for dinner conversation at The Knoll, Friday night or Corning Headquarters on Saturday night.
