A question was asked about Tyrian glass identification. Beth Shaut of the Carder Steuben Shop in Corning responds.
First thing, the figure 10.40 in Dimitroff’s book is a decorated Blue Aurene in what is referred to as Tiffany Blue leaf and vine and also, just because it has the Intarsia border does not make it Turin. Intarsia borders were used on other types of Aurenes. The lamp is Tyrian and complete with shade and base made at the same time. It was explained to me that the Tyrian was achieve by reintroduction of the glass to heat at intervals to achieve the differences between the deep plumb to deep Green Jade look, as the colors were achieved heat reaction.
Then Beth provides further information on glass bearing the “Rockwell” fleur de lis.
As I said in my response to the bottles that were mark with Rockwell shield, was that they bought the blanks from a multitude of companies from all over, as they didn’t make anything and just decorated it. Also the bottles in question also had Steuben marks but this wasn’t always done. We have here in the shop 3 piece of Tiffen glass with Rockwell Sterling, one signed and 2 MP Morgan blanks with decoration in Rockwell Sterling.
It’s been fun communicating with John Styler of Prospect Heights, Illinois. He is rather new to the e-mail list. He’s been an active participant in questions and answers. He is one of the first who signed up for the Symposium (incidentally a brochure is attached for your information); and then with unbridled enthusiasm. John came up with the idea of proposing a commemorative stamp to Frederick Carder. Then he wrote up a proposal to the Postal Service and got things under way. John, a great spirit. John wrote yesterday.
I was at the Chicago Botanic Garden today with my daughter and we talked about the symposium. All three of my children are excited I am going.
I was telling her about the very interesting messages you forward, is it this or what about that.
Thanks to Karen Ohland who works at the Met Museum in NYC. She already followed up today with her own letter to the U.S. Postal Service.
