Art Glass Nouveau by Ray & Lee Grover

p. 141

Cluthra glass is partially transparent, two-layered glass, wherein chemicals fixed between the two layers create small air pockets in the center of white splotches. This effect is highly suggestive of “sunny side up, fried eggs,” when the yolk of the egg is positioned, as is the air pocket in the white splotch in the glass. The air pocket, it should be pointed out, is not centered , but rather off to one side. Cluthra comes in solid colors as well as pieces shading from color to white. Contrary to popular opinion, signed pieces actually are not infrequent. Many collectors have come to this opinion, however, notwithstanding the difficulty created by the mark blending too well into the rest of the glass. When the base of the piece has been satinized or sanded off it is well nigh impossible to find the mark. The shape illustrated, usually with handles, in various sizes, is probably the most common shape in the Cluthra line.
