Slowly, but surely we’ve been showing you the Carder Steuben Exhibit that was on display last summer at the University of Southern Indiana along with the attendant labels prepared by the University’s Art Collection Registrar, Susan Colaricci Sauls. We’re getting near to the end, but here is another one which I hope you’ll enjoy.

Hawkes Cut Rosaline Perfume

This particular perfume was a production piece ordered by T.G. Hawkes & Company. Steuben glass would produce the glass form called a “blank” and Hawkes would cut the glass design then sell the completed bottle to the perfume manufacturer.

Technical Note: Thomas G. Hawkes was the key to Frederick Carder moving from England to the United States and to setting up the Steuben Glass Works. He provided Carder with a building that included a foundry and promised to purchase all blanks used by Hawkes and Company from the Steuben Glass Works. A blank is an undecorated glass object that will have decoration or embellishment added later.
