HOW DO I GET TO CORNING FOR THE SYMPOSIUM?

In addition to the airport at Elmira/Corning, you may also consider flying into Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse or Binghamton, NY.

BACKGROUND ON RAILWAY SIGNALS

Hi Alan,

John Hoxie who worked for nearly 40 years or better in optics told me one day while we were working with some lenses, that Corning knew nothing about solid colors of glass until Fred Carder came here. It is interesting to note that Carder announced the first production piece in 1904 and that Corning had announced the standardization of color for railroad optical in 1905. This led to the standardization of colors by the AAR board in 1905 and again in 1935. In other words which colors were acceptable which led to companies having to trademark their glass. In case of an accident the glass product is the first to catch the blame. This is why Corning kept their testing equipment (as photometers and spectrometers) in operation as late as the early 80’s. John remembers testing lenses this late because of an accident in New York in 1979. I have hunted for years to find some written documents connecting Carder with Corning. This would answer why Corning allowed another glass factory to get started and why they supported Steuben eventually buying them.

Best Regards,

Bobby Rockwell
