Lots of Thoughts About Egg Cups

At the Symposium John Stranges presented his Ivory and Black collection. One item created a discussion. What was it for. Debby Schultz suggested it was an egg cup.

1) Debby responds

I could not find another drawing in Gardner’s book that was at all similar to my “egg cups”. We were sold these as Carder Steuben pieces years ago. I am sure the eggs were smaller than todays, but that is the size I had to demonstrate. I guess the search will go on.

2) John Styler opines

Cigarette holders for sure; it was fashionable back when to enjoy a smoke after eating. I remember dining at the Tower Suite in the Time Life building in NY years ago and there was a cigarette holder at every place at the tables. What wasn’t allowed were cameras.

These pieces are certainly beautiful no matter who made them!

3) Jan Baer has a little fun

Maybe this was a family that really, really liked smoking. Perhaps they owned a lot of shares in a tobacco company.

——————

It’s 1: 30 AM, and a couple of workers stumble into the factory after a night of binge drinking. “Do you know what this place needs? Cigarette holders.

The next thing that happens is that it’s 9:30 AM and Carder walks in, finding the items piled from floor to ceiling. “Holy mother of god!” At 11:00 AM, a sign goes on the door, “Cigarette holders, buy one get two free!”

4) Harry Morgan addresses physical properties of eggs.

One more question in the “egg cup” discussion. Presumably the egg would be quite hot when put into the cup. Would the glass hold up to the heat?
