Response to Bonnie Salzman on the End Game

Thanks for your comments Bonnie. I totally agree with you. First though, “Great job on the symposium”, so looking forward to next year to see what you come up with. I also want to thank auction chair, Mark Chamovitz, and all others involved. The auction/dinner was a fun night with some great deals. Bonnie, you mentioned several great points. I too so enjoy my collection, especially Saturday morning when the rest of the family is sleeping. I’m up at 5:30 AM sitting in the living room with a hot cup of coffee and only the curio lights on enjoying each Steuben piece. This is my quiet time and a great way to start the morning.

Back to the subject matter. In talking with others, the possible categories about what to do with their collection that others mentioned were Donating (Museum or Institute), Send to an auction house, Pass down to a family member or Friend (have I mentioned I consider you all my friends) or, as Bonnie has pointed out, keep it longer and enjoy, realizing we are all just “caretakers”.

I asked this question and collected these notes as I heard from some collectors: “I don’t know what to do with my glass. It’s now boxed up as I downsized.” or “What should I do with my collection, no one else appreciates it.” There were also some “Ah Ha” moments for me when you shared how to document the collection in the event something happens to us, i.e., how to help our families understand more about the glass when they dispose of it.
