Sam Kissee of Chico, California sends this word of warning along

Hello Alan,

I wanted to relate a story regarding “stuck” handles on pieces of glass. About 25 years ago I was at the Hillsborough Antique Show on the peninsula south of San Francisco. I was just entering a booth when I saw a woman pick up a cut glass water pitcher by the handle. Well the handle snapped off and the pitcher hit the floor. Not pretty.

The moral of this sad tale is a warning to all glass collectors. Never pick up a piece of glass by just the handle, use both hands. I have no idea if there was a crack in the piece before it broke.

Mike Durand of Absecon, New Jersey adds this information for our knowledge bank

Alan,

It has been said, at the Durand factory, that seconds were put out on a table for employees to purchase for a very minimal price.

A dealer once said to me you may need to buy a “second”, a rare perfect piece may never become available.
