The Gazelle Gazette may be erratic this coming week. A computer failure that requires replacing my existing computer and hopefully saving most material on Steuben. If you can enlarge upon the information below it would be most helpful in understanding and covering up for material I don’t presently have without my usual computer.

As you can see David Chadwick-Brown is a political scientist, which makes him also an historian and requires a substantial library. In one of his libraries are an assortment of Steuben goodies. Here are David’s comments.

The amethyst prunts and chain design on iridescent compote, 3237. The 2851, calcite bowl has a rim, or lip wrap, of aurene. Covered compote in yellow jade, 3348, confirms (to me) why yellow was a color displeasing to Mr. Carder. The 938 vase is iridized blue jade, and while I have several iridized green jades, this is the first time I have seen it done on blue. Green vase, 6078, is sculptured, and called Sculptured, as the design. Two-line pillar , sea green, 7311. At the bottom is what I had hoped was a mother of pearl, of Carder vintage, but after a series of emails to Willson Cragie and Rande Bly, we thought it was probably not Steuben, even if color and shape seemed appropriate. (My quest for the ‘unusuals,’ i.e., Burmese, MOP, straw opal, continues!)

On the right side, there is a cintra blue and orange striped shade, which is more clearly shown on the website, 3252. I sent the picture to Marshall Ketchum, saying I didn’t know if it was 3252 or 3253, as both are shown in Gardner, but seem indistinguishable, except for a small measurement variation. As unusual as a cintra shade of Steuben is, there is a cylindrical cluthra shade 3575, the color having been entered as amber cluthra on the website. Also, a red cluthra shade, but of unknown shape. Actually, it is a lamp shaft (the hardware for which is in storage), but can also can be (and now is) displayed as a shade. Since I have run out of table space to show any more lamps, it has to disport as a shade. A calcite shade with gold medallion, 2575; a 2345 VDS shade, with blue threading and engraved; a calcite shade with gold aurene leaf, 2241; green on white hooked, perhaps 980?; and a putative 3576 shade with vines and spatter decoration in green and gold – all awaiting a permanent use.
