Bobeche?

Jeremy Hayes of Port Dover, Canada has a question–perhaps you can help with an answer:

In the spirit of ongoing discussion that we all seem to enjoy, there are items called bobeches (see Gardner page 205). These are placed at the top of the candlestick with a hole in the center for the candle to pass. I have seen them but never tried them. Is their purpose just to catch dripping wax and/or prevent the candle from burning to low and causing damage? These are shown as shapes 975,976.5, 980.5, and 6447. Also are these clear or in colors? Any pictures?

Regards,
Jeremy Hayes

Czech or Polish

Alan, I will make a “guess” on Brian Severn’s fan vase from the photo. The vase looks new or newer (1980’s), possibly Czech or Polish. Both the shape and the cutting don’t look right for Carter to me.
