A Few Refinements On The Last Gazette

Issue 1706

HGM STEUBEN NO. 49

1.I agree that the bowl in Gazette #1704 is Shape 2851 but the color looks more like Wisteria than Amethyst. I suggest that someone at the museum look at the bowl under both fluorescent and iridescent light to see if it appears to change color. If it does, its Wisteria.

2. Alan,

I think that David meant to say incandescent lighting not iridescent.

CASED, FLASHED, STAINED?

This question has been posed:

1. “I’ve been studying glass recently with two layers – colored over colorless. These pieces are variously described as “cased”, “flashed” or “stained”. Could someone please explain the difference among these three terms and how I can tell the difference (especially in a photograph)?”

2. Answer– the full explanation is found here Thank you, Charles Sweigart.

3. Alan, Charles Sweigart’s article answers most of the questions, but only briefly mentions “enameled” which is a layer of finely ground glass mixed with a solvent and painted on and fired. Also the term “paperweight” fits in. A layer of clear glass that covers the outside of an article.

Leigh Alan Demrow, Janesville, Wisconsin.
