In Gazelle Gazette #1659 Scott Hansen pointed out that it is a mystery why most of the 5000 series numbers are missing. Marshall Ketchum’s book indicates that the highest number in this series is #5233. On July 21, 1921, George B. Hollister, the CGW sales manager, released a report that listed the 167 shape numbers that would comprise the “standard line” of Steuben ware. All other numbers were deemed obsolete. The list of the standard numbers is published as a footnote on page 49 0f Tom Dimitroff’s book. The last number listed is #5230, very close to the last number in the 5000 series (5233). When new designs were eventually needed, the remaining 5000 numbers were skipped with the new series beginning with #6000. This indicates that shape numbers 5234 to 5999 never existed and are not “lost.”

At the time the standard line appeared, Carder had the title of corporate art director and had no direct authority over Steuben. On May 10, 1923, Carder was reinstated as director of the Steuben Division, and perhaps he decided to make a fresh start and begin with #6000.

Stevens & Williams

This is an example of a Stevens & Williams piece in their version of yellow jade and alabaster. There were a number of the S & W jades made. Some of the colors are easy to tell from Steuben because Steuben never made them. The green and rosaline versions are the most difficult to differentiate from Steuben. The yellow is lighter and brighter than Steuben’s version. Marshall Ketchum

A TECHNICAL QUESTION ON HOW TO PRINT THE GAZETTE

Even in the “Having trouble viewing this email” mode, I cannot print this issue of the Gazette without cutting the first vase in half. What can be done about this ongoing problem? Tom Westervelt, Durango, Colorado

THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL

We just received an inquiry from a member who said she mailed in her check last month. However, she didn’t receive the Rockwell Museum DVD and coincidentally her check was never cashed. The Club has had problems with the Post Office delivery.If this should apply to you and you wondered what has happened, please reply and let us know. Without your letting us know we can’t fix the problem.
