Mrs. Durfee Day

Alan –

Mrs. Durfee Day was a busy woman at the exhibition of Steuben glass at the Milwaukee Art Institute in 1938. In addition to the pieces I showed a week or so ago, here she is holding a shape 7784 candelabra designed by James McNaughton. (Madigan, 2nd edition, p. 342). The photograph bears a stamped date of May 29, 1938. McNaughton was a member of the design department at Steuben from October 1938 until January 1939 (Madigan, p. 240). That’s a discrepancy I can’t explain. The vase in the photo in the upper right hand corner appears to be either shape 7842 or 7796, both designed by George Thompson (Madigan, p. 325). Thompson joined the Steuben design department in 1936 (Madigan, p. 244).
