The question has been raised whether the base glass is various decorated Aurenes, e.g. Red, Green or Brown, for example, are on alabaster or the more translucent calcite glass. Greg Merkel has tested some of these in the laboratory and finds thus far only calcite. Perhaps Dick Weerts of Osprey, Florida is suggesting a refinement that may help in this analysis.

Alan: I was told and hope I remember the story correctly that Alabaster was used as base glass prior to 1912 as calcite was not perfected until that time. After 1912 calcite was the base glass for decorated pieces. Some decorated pieces were made prior to 1912 and these would have an alabaster base. Do not know if my memory is correct or the source was correct but thought I would add it to the discussion. Dick Weerts
