We continue to preview some of the wonderful presentations lined up for this year’s annual CSGA Symposium.
At the September Symposium Vic Weinstein will speak about English Cameo glass, sharing many images from his own extensive collection as well as others’. The manufacturing process and techniques used by makers will be discussed.
After John Northwood I left Richardsons in 1859, he established his own workshop. It was during this time that he gained international acclaim for reviving the art of cameo glass, beginning with his reproduction of the ancient Roman Portland Vase, which he completed in 1876.
Frederick Carder was taken to see the vase at Northwood’s studio, and in later years he acknowledged that the experience inspired him to pursue a career in the glass industry. It was Northwood himself who recommended Carder for the position of designer at Stevens and Williams. Thus, cameo glass played a foundational role in launching Frederick Carder’s long and successful career in glassmaking.
Here are some examples of English Cameo Glass.
About the speaker: Vic Weinstein spent his childhood in Long Island’s south shore and worked as a clam digger until he finished medical school. In 1981, the breathtaking beauty of the Low Country led him to Charleston, South Carolina, where he has been a practicing OB/GYN physician until his retirement in 2022. Vic and his wife, Randi, have four children and two grandchildren.
