1925 Exposition: Art Deco on the World Stage

Issue 3758

We continue to preview some of the wonderful presentations lined up for this year’s annual CSGA Symposium.

Sue Maynard will be presenting A Tour of the 1925 Paris Art Deco Exposition at this year’s Symposium. This was an important world exhibition which Frederick Carder attended.

One hundred years ago, Paris hosted the exposition that introduced the term “Art Deco” to the world.  The Expo attracted fifteen thousand exhibitors and sixteen million visitors to view the products and entertainments offered. This presentation will explore some of the outstanding exhibits and attractions thanks to the photographs and artifacts from the Expo.

Sue will share her knowledge on this anniversary year of this celebration of modernism.

Here is a bit about our speaker, Sue Maynard, in her own words:  After careers in teaching and IT, I have been able to focus on collecting and researching 20th century glass and pottery. In the 1980’s, my husband Steve and I met Mr. Rockwell and began to collect Carder Steuben glass. We then became interested in Cowan Pottery, made in Cleveland in the 1920’s, and in Clarice Cliff pottery, produced in the UK in the 1920’s and 30’s. My interest in these arts endeavors has led to writing and giving presentations to collector groups. I have volunteered and served as a board member at several non-profits and museums. My research on Shaker history led to the writing and publication of a book-length biography of the last Shaker brother at Canterbury Shaker Village.

In case you missed it:  Sue also gave a wonderfully researched presentation at last year’s Symposium, weaving delightful stories of Carder and the days at Steuben Glass informed by newspaper articles and other materials of the time.  Her presentation was recorded and is available for viewing on our website here.
