Our boots-on-the-ground Treasurer, Jenny Monroe, attended the Corning Museum of Glass’s Brilliant Color exhibition opening celebration. Brilliant Color features objects from the Museum’s permanent collection and the collection of the Rakow Research Library. “Color” is the central theme with examples from historic makers including Frederick Carder for Steuben, Tiffany Studios, Harry Northwood, Joseph Locke, Émile Gallé, and René Lalique.
Jenny took some pictures to share and said this exhibit will make a great addition to our Carder Steuben Glass Association Symposium (which will be held Sept. 18-20, 2025 in Corning)!
The Fisher Set is an expansive grouping of Steuben tableware in Gold Ruby cut to clear. It was made for the wedding of Howard A. and Justine Price Fisher in 1928, one of the biggest Detroit social events of the year. The bride was marrying into the Fisher family of Detroit – that’s right – Body by Fisher who supplied auto bodies to General Motors.
In the trousseau department of Hudson’s Department Store, the Steuben sales representative (who happened to be there at just the right moment) was able to convince the bride that in addition to champagnes and white and red wine glasses, that she really ought to have clarets, cordials, sherries, two sizes of tumblers, dinner plates, soup bowls with their under plates, plus the required serving dishes and candlesticks to complete the order. The set was made and each piece in the 12-piece place setting was engraved by Joseph Libisch, one of Steuben finest engravers. Large special orders occasionally happened, but none had ever been of this caliber — for the Fisher family paid $75,000 in gold dollars.
