The Studio Tour

All I can say is WOW, the new Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass is quite impressive! At the Symposium this year we were to treated to an introduction and tour given by Richard Whiteley, who was humorous as well as informative. Richard joined The Corning Museum of Glass Studio as the Senior Program Manager; he is responsible for developing and managing new glassmaking programming. Richard, a celebrated Australian artist, most recently had been working as Associate Professor: Head of the Glass Workshop and Foundation Studies at his alma mater, the Australian National University’s School of Art & Design.

Richard’s introduction explained that The Studio will be an international center for artists and students working in glass. The Studio fills a gap in casting and cold-working at CMoG. Prior to this expansion, a glass artist would have to go overseas to create large-scale cast glass works. Major initiatives of The Studio include:

  1. Expanding making your own glass
  2. Right-sizing the studio
  3. Residencies
  4. Casting Center
  5. Glassmaking Institute

Richard gave us a tour through The Studio which included the new casting center, cold-working rooms, study rooms, woodshop and many other areas. It was fascinating to see all the aspects of glassmaking that The Studio covers. We went to the new engraving room dedicated to Max Erlacher & Jiří Harcuba, where our organization was recognized for its contribution. We saw the new “make your own” glass rooms — maybe we should try one next year! Finally, we learned the three most important things about building a space for cold-working glass: DRAINAGE, DRAINAGE & DRAINAGE.

One last note, I heard Elizabeth Creech asking about who is accepted into the study program; maybe we have an aspiring new artist in our midst?

IN OUR THOUGHTS

Hurricane Helene has devastated parts of the Southeast including Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee. There is currently another storm bearing down on Florida. We are thinking about all of those who have been impacted by the storms (including some of our members) and hope everyone is able to stay safe. Please keep all those affected by the storms in your thoughts and prayers.
