In this Gazelle Gazette we continue to preview the presentations that will be a part of the program at the upcoming CSGA Symposium. More Symposium details and registration information are available on the CSGA website here. Be sure to make your plans early enough to take advantage of the discounted hotel rates. We hope to see you in Corning in September!
Using materials from contemporary newspapers, magazines, and trade publications, this presentation will share views of the founding, growth, and products of the Steuben Glass Works and of the life and accomplishments of Frederick Carder during the years from 1903 to the mid-1930’s. These publications reflected the public interest in the introduction of a company in Corning that produced innovative, high quality art glass and in the person most responsible for the creative ideas behind the work. Frederick Carder also played a prominent role in the civic life of Corning for many decades.
About the presenter: Sue Maynard attended Wellesley College and Case Western Reserve University, earning a B.A. and M.A. in History and a Certificate in Management from CWRU’s Weatherhead School of Management. She taught history at the high school level, made the transition to IT and consulting, and worked as a systems project manager at a large regional bank corporation in Cleveland.
Sue has volunteered and served as a board member at several non-profits and museums and served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Canterbury Shaker Village for twelve years. Her research there led to the writing and publication of a book-length biography, titled “A Shaker Life,” of the last Shaker brother at Canterbury Shaker Village.
Sue has an interest in Art Deco era glass and ceramics that has led to collecting, scholarly research, writing, and presentations, focusing on both U.S. and British production. She has given presentations to collector groups and art museums.
We are soliciting donations for an auction to be held during the Saturday evening banquet dinner. Proceeds of the auction support the Carder Steuben Glass Association website and our Steuben glass mission. The CSGA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and you will receive a tax receipt for your donation.
You may wish to donate or consign Carder Steuben glass, post-Carder Steuben glass, glass of the same era, or glass with relevance to Corning. Other items like books, New York state wine, or Frederick Carder items also make great auction entries. Please send item descriptions to President@steubenglass.org.
