Mary Faulconer

Mary Faulconer (NY, 1912-2011) was art director for Harper’s Bazaar magazine in 1940 and for Mademoiselle magazine in 1945. She was also a painter, designer and teacher of advertising from 1936 to 1940 at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art where she had been a student. In 1972 a stamp design of hers was accepted by the U.S. Postal Service. She also did commission paintings for Steuben Glass and for UNICEF. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and exhibited her work in galleries in New York City, Hilton Head, South Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee. (from Who Was Who in American Art).

I have been trying to find information on the commission paintings Faulconer did for Steuben Glass. So far I have been unsuccessful. Initially, I assumed that the paintings were of Steuben glass itself (probably Modern, not Carder) but then I realized that I might be thinking too narrowly. Perhaps the paintings might have been her usual subject matter – still lifes and landscapes – and commissioned for a corporate art collection.

Faulconer was a prolific artist and her lithographs and even a few paintings can be easily found for sale on-line. But, I can’t find anything about her work for Steuben Glass. Do any of the Gazette readers have any information they could share?
