Mildred was one of the prime dealers in Seattle, and I recall at one auction at that great auction house, a wealthy Seattle businessman was engaged in a bidding battle with her, and because he had the money of Croesus, simply wanted to keep her from purchasing a blue aurene vase. He simply bid it up into the three thousands, before she was finally forced to concede. She expressed frustration about that old spiteful man.

Upon his death, they discovered that all of his winning bids over several years had been shipped by the auction house, to his home in Seattle. And all were in their original shipping boxes from the auction house, stacked unopened in his basement.

His joy came not from owning, but simply beating out the competition. The adrenaline rush of winning an auction bidding war was all he cared about, and probably didn’t know Steuben from Tiffany, nor did he care!
